Let me start off by saying I know this is not so clear, but it's an old picture :).
When this project was introduced to us the first thing I thought about was how many pictures my family has saved up from years and years. My mom is the kind of mom that lives to take pictures of EVERYTHING! And that I am not exaggerating. She has pictures of all kinds of things. I thought about pictures and there were two in particular that would not leave my mind. The first was a picture of my grandfather from my father's side who I was very close to and passed away about seven years ago and the other was this one. It was pretty simple when it came to choosing which one I would interview about simply because this is the one I chose I knew less about. Out of both of the pictures I was more drawn to and interested in this particular one I chose because of the people in it; the idea of studium. According to Barthes studium is the element that creates interest in a picture. When I first took a look at this picture there was nothing that distracted me from the picture itself and the people in it; therefore, punctum did not take place. If we had to say the room overall was a picture then yes this picture would have been my punctum according to Barthes.
My mother was given this picture by one of her brothers, my tio Enrique, about a year ago. It’s my mom’s side of the family. She decided to put it up for several of reasons one being that it reminded her of her father who passed away in ’88. This picture was taken on the day of the burial at a cemetery in Puerto Rico. In this picture are most of my mom’s siblings except for two as well as some of my grandmother’s grandchildren.
INTERESTING FACT: My mom is one of 15 children, all from the same mother and father. 8 boys and 7 girls! Crazy right?
My mom had a huge family and it was not until a couple years ago that I met most of my aunts and uncles on her side. It was a great experience!! I was so excited to me all my cousins that I kind of never knew existed from her side of the family. One of the main reasons I have yet to see them was because most of them live in Puerto Rico and we don’t usually get the chance to visit there as often as we would like. My mom is the girl in just about the middle of the picture slightly to the right. She has a long sleeve, what looks like white, shirt on, black hair, and hooped earrings. The older lady to the left of her is my Abuela, her mommy and my grandmother.
What I originally wanted to do was interview my Abuela, but unfortunately she was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; therefore, I will be interviewing my mother, Irisell. For the most part my grandmother sort of remembers things, but frequently thinks that my mom is still a young child and shocked that she has three girls. I’m looking forward to learning a lot more about where they are today and how this particular day was for my mother.
Upon reading parts of Hacking’s book Photography: The Whole Story I’ve learn a lot more about pictures and what some things means when they are displayed. With knowing this my goal is to kind of analyze this photo like Hacking did with some of the pictures within her book. I’m curious as to who is taking this picture? Was it taken by a professional? If so, did he know what he was doing as far as presentation? I didn’t get a chance to be here because I wasn’t born yet and/or meet my grandfather on my mother’s side, so I’m looking forward to visualizing myself and making that connection with him that I couldn’t.
